"Simply to live does not justify existence, for life is a mere gesture on the surface of the earth, and death a return to that from which we had never been separated; but oh to leave a trace, no matter how faint, of that brief gesture! For someone, some day, may find it beautiful." — Frank O'Hara
PAINTING
I’ve always considered myself a painter even when there’s been a series of years that were “brushless.” Words that would describe my paintings are: bold lines, strong colors, whimsical brushwork. Most rewarding for me is when my audience appreciates my enthusiasm.
FIBER ARTS
I could not have predicted that one year into my retirement I would be part of a group of rug hookers – twenty women and one man – enthusiastically embracing the idea of designing, dyeing, cutting and hooking little loops of wool on to a linen foundation; then a year or so later exhibiting our finished pieces.
SCULPTURE
One day an instructor in the art school I was attending asked me to recruit painters to fill a sculpture class. I was not interested in actually taking the class myself until the instructor said, “You’ve got to be kidding. You go in there and find yourself a welding station.” After just three hours in that class I decided to put down my paint brushes and pick up a welding torch. The result for me was 3-D magic for the next twenty five years.
